The Good stuff: Welcome Spring

Wednesday was the first day of spring and holy heck if it didn’t actually look and feel like it. What better way to shove winter into your repressed memory bank that with something called the Super Worm Moon (uummm??) and a new weekly roundup? We’ll see if I can keep this going, but here’s the first one:

GOOD READS.

Here’s a collection of articles that caught my attention this week.

1 – ‘I Send Letters After Relationships End, But No One Writes Me Back’

The Cut: Ask Polly (Heather Havrilesky) is my favorite advice writer and she kills it in this response to a writer who sends out long letters to people post-breakup. Basically, the advice is: stop fucking doing that. I’ve been on the receiving end of letters from ex boyfriends, stalkers, and friends quite often and I can tell you: a one-sided manifesto of all the reasons why I suck as a human (that you didn’t have the balls to tell me about in person) is not a sign of character or growth. Still, though, Polly delivers her wisdom with force, but she’s also graceful in her “Hey, I’ve been there,” way. I love her vulnerability.

2 – Free of Parking: Cities Have a Lot to Gain from Recycling Car-Centric Space

99PercentInvisible: From my favorite podcast comes a look at what you don’t see: that our cities are full of unused space! I’m passionate about smart urban design and this article and video will change the way you think about cities, parking, cars, and why we don’t walk to places more often.

GOOD VIBES.

The new hotness in music that I found this week.

1 – Lux Prima by Karen O and Danger Mouse (Moody, Sexy, Good)

listen.

2 – Lo/Hi by The Black Keys (The first single from the band in a long time.)

listen.

3 – What I Think About The World by 照井利幸 (Instrumental)
listen.

GOOD VIEWS.

Binge to you heart’s content.

1 – Queer Eye Season 3

Netflix: My favorite thing about this show, if I’m honest, is the emphasis on 1. Self-care as a symptom of your mental health and empowerment and 2. The theme that there is no one way to be gay, straight, white, black, femme, masculine, etc. Being yourself is an act of self-love. Whatever form it takes.

Stream.

GOODNESS.

Self-care is sexy. Here’s the improvement making the rounds at Botfriendly.

1 – Daring Greatly by Brene Brown.

Amazon: I saw Brene Brown a few years ago and it changed the actual course of my entire life. I just finished her book, cover-to-cover, via audible. I recommend the audio version because I like hearing her talk to me. It’s like having a good friend tell you why you’re great when you’re freaking out, filled with shame, and full of self-doubt. Big take-aways:

  • Shame loves a worthiness list
  • Hope is not an emotion, it’s a thought-process. It’s Plan B.

Breathe.

GOOD NEWS.
