GOOD VIEWS: New shows and movies.
1 – Ted Bundy: Falling For a Killer
Amazon Originals: There are a lot of Ted Bundy docs available right now—he seems to be pretty popular—but this is the first one that tells the story through the eyes of the women who were impacted. The political climate in Seattle and the University area in Washington in the late 60’s and early 70’s saw the rise of feminism, independence, and diversity. And this filled the traditionally empowered elite with rage. The result was a disaster. Ted’s long-time girlfriend, an ex-mormon and Utahn, shares her story of gaslighting and abuse at the hands of Bundy: a charismatic and charming liar. In the doc, we see Bundy slipping through the system for years through a system of victim blaming and character protection. This series does a great job of shedding a more positive light on his victims’ backgrounds by giving their loved ones a platform to share, in detail, how great they actually were. The loss of his crimes was bigger than the horrors he committed, and it is truly tragic.
GOODNESS: Self-care is sexy. Here’s the improvement making the rounds at Botfriendly.
1 – Dry January
I completed Dry January to kick off 2020. The goal was to abstain from alcohol for the entire month. It was easy this year; I didn’t miss it. I don’t miss a lot of things. It was, however, lonely. I get up super early for work, so it was nice to have a clear head, but it gets dark so early that I found myself going to bed at 7 pm.
Here’s an article on the pros of Dry January. Here’s one on the opposite.
Still though…it helped with the second GOODNESS action of the month…
2 – Hot Yoga
I signed up for a month of Hot Yoga at a local studio. I was able to make it to 18 classes. Most were 90 minutes at around 105 degrees. (That’s 27 hours spent without my phone, if you’re checking.) These weren’t strictly Bikram classes (most studios don’t use his name anymore because they can practice without it now), they were less strict—but still hard. I lost 7 pounds, and I now have abs. Also, I can tree-pose like a Zen Boss.
Some of the things I learned and kept as a mantra during my classes:
- Your heart is a compass.
- You are OK.
- Let go. Make space.
- You have to feel it to heal it.
